Conservation Projects

Frankfurt Zoological Society engages in several, sustainable and long-lasting conservation projects in and around Serengeti National Park.

“Serengeti shall not die” is the title of Bernhard and Michael Grzimek’s academy award-winning 1959 documentary. And it is our goal and vision to this day. The Serengeti remains at the core of our conservation work in Africa.

We are continuing our engagement in close collaboration with Tanzania National Parks and provide critical financial and logistical support and know-how for resource protection, ecological and threat monitoring and park management to the Serengeti National Park.

FAQ

We receive many questions about Serengeti and our conservation work. Here are the answers to the most common ones.

We are one of the oldest conservation organizations in existence. We were founded in 1858 in Frankfurt, Germany. Today, we run about 30 conservation projects in 18 different countries. All our projects focus on protecting biodiverse, wild and pristine wilderness areas. Learn more at our official website of Frankfurt Zoological Society. Around Serengeti we are simply known as ‘Frankfurt’.

Serengeti is an icon among all national parks and one of the world’s most precious wilderness areas. Bernhard Grzimek, who was one of our most influential society members, started our first international conservation project in Serengeti in 1957. Since then, nothing really changed and we have been supporting our Tanzanian partners and organisations, making this one of the longest running conservation projects in our history.

We support our Tanzanian partners in many different ways. In a nutshell: We run the workshop in Seronera, which keeps the Ranger’s cars running, we maintain and operate planes to carry out reconnaissance flights to detect poaching activities, the planes are also used to do regular animal censuses. We help to procure necessary ranger equipment like uniforms, boots and radios. Together with the Tanzania National Park Authority we build a digital radio network and an operations room, which controls all ranger operations. Our youngest activity involves tourism operators, who help to spot deadly snares, which are probably the biggest threat to wildlife in Serengeti.

Our work in Serengeti National Park dates back to 1957, when Bernhard Grzimek started his ground-breaking work for the protection of the region. Today, we continue this work by collaborating closely with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and providing critical financial and logistical support for resource protection, ecological and threat monitoring, and park management. Anti-poaching strategies are also a central focus of our work.

Thank you for your interest in joining Frankfurt Zoological Society. Please check our official jobs website for current openings.

Great that you ask. There are several ways to support Serengeti. If you visit, please make sure you select your tour operator wisely. Try to avoid to leave a big footprint. Respect the wildlife. You can also stop by our remote office in Seronera. But be aware, that our staff is mostly out of office doing field work.

You can support our work directly as a donor, patron or member of the Frankfurt Zoological Society. Have a look at our website to get more details on this.

We are a conservation organisation working in Serengeti. Our focus is not on travel, nor do we keep up with all the touristic opportunities that develop in and around the Serengeti. Find general travel advice in the travel section of the Serengeti website.
